Global Health on trial through June 30, 2009

In an effort to assist in the battle against swine flu, CABI is making their Global Health database freely available to the public over the coming weeks.  Global Health is known as the definitive international public health database. It contains abstracting and indexing of information related to public health and veterinary research, with coverage back to 1910. CABI has also made available a “swine flu dashboard“, which brings together information from information from CABI, the Center of Disease Control and the World Health Organization.

LexisNexis Congressional Research Digital Collection on trial through May 15

The Meriam Library has been given trial access to the LexisNexis Congressional Research Digital Collection. This database contains Congressional Research Service reports and Congressional Committee Prints. These reports are intended to provide Congress with information related to policy making, covering a very wide variety of topics. The documents are prepared to be objective, unbiased, concise, and easy to read. Each document is in fully searchable PDF format, with subject indexing terms. Coverage dates for the trial are 1830 to present for the Committee Prints, and 1916 to present for the Congressional Research Service reports. There is a subscription option to this database for coverage of 2004 to present.

Readex U.S. Congressional Serial Set on trial through April 23, 2009.

The Meriam Library has been given trial access to the Readex U.S. Congressional Serial Set. This database contains the same information found in the Lexis Nexis Serial Set posted below. The difference is the user interface used in each company’s database platform.

The Meriam Library has been given trial access to the U.S. Serial Set Digital Collection. This is an online collection of reports and documents either produced or ordered by Congress, as well as Presidential communications and information related to treaties. Coverage is from 1789 to 1969.  This important collection of historical documents in now available online, and can be searched using keyword or index terms.

World Trade Press databases on trial through May 15, 2009

World Trade Press is a publisher specializing in international trade, logistics, and country data. They are now marketing their publications to academic institutions, and have given the Meriam Library trial access to two of their databases. The first is AtoZMapsOnline. This database is a collection of over 4,000 maps. Coverage is world-wide, and included are outline maps, political maps, physical maps, climate maps, thematic maps, and even antique maps.

The other database to which we have trial access is Global Road Warrior. This is a country database, and like other country databases it includes country facts covering geography, governments and the economy. It is intended to be used by international business travelers, though, and because of  this,  it features practical information not typically found in other country databases. For example, there is detailed information on society and culture — things like superstitions, food and recipees, and stereotypes.

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The San Francisco Chronicle on trial through Dec. 17

ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The San Francisco Chronicle is an online archive of the San Francisco Chronicle with coverage from 1865-1922. The database features page images of the actual articles, cover-to-cover. Unlike microfilm, the articles are searchable, making historical research easy.

ProQuest Accounting & Tax with Standards on trial through Dec. 17

ProQuest Accounting & Tax with Standards is a full-text database that contains coverage from over 2000 accounting, tax and financial management publications from over 19 countries worldwide. It also includes current accounting standards, interpretations, and other texts from FASB, GASB, and IASB.

America’s Newspapers on trial through Dec. 19.

The Meriam Library has been given trial access to Newsbank’s America’s Newspapers. This database contains local and regional newspapers from across the United States with current day coverage. It includes the Chico Enterprise Record, and the Orion. Users are able to search the newspapers, save articles, and create email alerts.

Testing and Education Reference Center on trial through Dec. 19

The Meriam Library has been given trial access to Gale’s Testing and Education Reference Center. Like the Learning Express Library posted below, this databases contains online test preparation guides, and online practice tests. Though the range of tests offered is smaller, the Testing and Education Reference Center also includes career guides and career assessment testing. There are also several college and career search guides available in the database.
