I agree that it would be helpful to know what programs would have to be cut in order to continue subscribing to this content. Having access to such a database seems like a good idea but this particular site's execution doesn't seem to be the best. Are there other options available?

I was really excited to see the library but was equally disappointed by the content.

This is solely my opinion and does not reflect the views of my department or colleagues. In communications, business and law, some of the key concepts are present in clips but the material so dated I am not sure it will resonate with students. There were a few historical negotiations in the database but at least one was also available on Youtube. The business material is from the late 1990's - old school (HP/Cisco etc. ect.). The most current business material I viewed was from 2003. The search result titles looked good but the underlying material did not deliver (notice no dates included). Outdated corporate training videos, are the swan song for my review. It is my view that existing resources are superior to what I viewed in this database.

Good site, but I would have to know how much it costs and what the library would have to cut to afford it. Books are good.

An amazing resource for instructors as well as students. The amount of videos in Spanish, students could use to research topics for homeworks and presentations on our department is amazing.

This is an incredible resource. It should definitely be kept for use of the CSU portal. It has a myriad of subjects to choose from and the videos are professional. It is hard to choose which to watch and to stop!

I think this is an extremely valuable resource for students, in ANY field of study. As a History major I found many interesting and helpful videos. And not only would I use this resource for research (which I am sure that I would quite often), but I would watch it at home for fun, too. I really think that the library should permanently subscribe to this.

Hi Kristina,
Thanks for your comment. I am happy to say that the new Search For/A Specific Journal Title has the same functionality as the old Periodicals list. If you want to search for all journals with the root archaeo anywhere in the title, you can use the drop down menu and select Keyword and type in archaeo* (don't forget the asterisk). This is actually a more complete list of the journals we have in a particular area because the periodicals list only looked at the title of the journal while the Library Catalog will search available subject headings as well as the title and, as you know, the title of a journal is not always reflective of its content.
We are keeping a list of comments and will add your concern about the font type and format to the list. That is something that can certainly be changed if enough people find it troublesome.

In switching from the "Periodicals List" to "Search For/A Specific Journal Title," we lost the ability to search using a root word to find all periodicals pertaining to a subject (e.g. archaeo for all archaeological journals, herpeto for all amphibian and reptile journals). If you know the specific title this switch is fine, btu it is terrible if you are unsure if the title is journal of archaeological science or journal of archaeology and science.

The format is also more difficult to read. If the periodical titles were in bold instead of red, browsing through several pages of titles would be easier.

In general this is not an improvement.

There is a whole range of events throughout the school year relating to The Soloist, from screenings of the movie to readings of passages from the book to musical performances. Chico State has put together a pair of guides to these events, which you can find here and here.

...And Thomas L. Friedman has dedicated his July 18 New York Times column to Greg Mortenson. Here are two paragraphs from Friedman's column, though the piece is worth reading as a whole:

While the admiral passed out notebooks, Mortenson told me why he has devoted his life to building 131 secular schools for girls in Pakistan and another 48 in Afghanistan: “The money is money well spent. These are secular schools that will bring a new generation of kids that will have a broader view of the world. We focus on areas where there is no education. Religious extremism flourishes in areas of isolation and conflict.

“When a girl gets educated here and then becomes a mother, she will be much less likely to let her son become a militant or insurgent,” he added. “And she will have fewer children. When a girl learns how to read and write, one of the first things she does is teach her own mother. The girls will bring home meat and veggies, wrapped in newspapers, and the mother will ask the girl to read the newspaper to her and the mothers will learn about politics and about women who are exploited.”
