Spotlight on Faculty: Synchronous Transcription Online, Getting it “Write”

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Graham Thurgood teaches linguistics at CSU, Chico

by Dr. Graham Thurgood

Play on words intended. One obstacle I have faced with online, or distance teaching, involves English transcription. The task involves basic transcription of English sounds (what a linguist would call phonemics) not a finely-tuned analysis (what a linguist would call phonetics).

However, this semester my class and I worked out a system that seems to get the job done. The students originally had a PDF crib sheet, downloaded and printed out, consisting of symbols for the basic consonants and vowels, along with carefully chosen words containing the various sounds and using appropriate symbols. So far, so good.

Lecture Capture with Wimba – CSU Chico

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

ONLINE WEBCAST

When: December 8, 2008 12:00 pm PST

Where: Online

Register to Attend: Wimba Registration

For years, instructors at CSU, Chico have taught classes that met to face-to-face but simultaneously had students logged in remotely via Wimba Classroom. These remote students were able to see the face-to-face teacher via video and a student assistant who fielded remote students’ questions and assisted the professor. This created a full classroom experience for both the in-person and the remote students – while also providing a unique way to capture lectures via Wimba Classroom.

Join Laura Sederberg and Ann Steckel as they explain their unique instructional techniques.

Current and Evolving Accessibility Practices: Practical Advice

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

NOW ON ARCHIVE

Original Date: October 21, 2008

Title: Current and Evolving Accessibility Practices: Practical Advice
from Two Institutions

Facilitators:
Afsaneh Sharif & Donna Scalzo, Office of Learning Technology, University
of British Columbia
John Louviere & Neal Legler, Faculty Assistance Center for Teaching,
Utah State University

Description:
Online learning environments hold great promise for expanding access to
education for students with time and geographic challenges. Providing a
supportive learning environment involves considering the needs of a wide
range of learners and instructors, including those with physical and
cognitive disabilities or technical limitations. The ability to do this
can be somewhat challenged within the structure of a course management
system such as Blackboard (WebCT) Vista, as full control of the web
interface may not be possible. In response to student and faculty needs,
educational developers from two institutions, the University of British
Columbia and Utah State University have worked to determine how some of
the issues may be addressed through instructional design, rigorous web
design methodologies and some technical applications. Please join us as
we share current and evolving practices in this important area of online
learning.

Developing The E-flective Practitioner: Using blogs to enhance Reflective Practice at Postgraduate level

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Presented ONLINE by: Paul Lowe, Course Director, MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography, London College of Communication

When: September 24, 200 at 8:00am Pacific Time

“Blogs form a vital part of the collaborative space in which postgraduates interact with each other and with tutors and industry professionals; operating as the core of the learning circle, connecting and interlinking its stages and transforming practical assignments into an Schonian repertoire of experience that prepares the student for professional practice. Their real time nature and the seamless mashing up of ideas, reflections, images, links and emotions of the blogging format create the foundations for a future generation of E-flective Practitioners.

This presentation discusses how the School of Media at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, uses blogs alongside synchronous interactions using the Wimba classroom to map the participants learning journey on the course in both full time face-to-face and fully online part time modes, and to build a collaborative community of practice on the course.

Blogs act as a conduit of connected knowledge between the teaching staff and the cohort, offering an unparralled insight into the working methodologies, influences, problems and successes of the group in real time in a way traditional tutorial forms cannot replicate.

The Media School targets mature students who are mid-career professionals looking to deepen and extend their practice, or who are looking to gain the skills and methodological toolbox to operate as professionals in the media and related areas.

Through student feedback and analysis of the role of blogs on the course, the course team identified several key features of blogs, identifying both the strengths and potential problem areas; and how they map onto Schon’s concepts of reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action.”

CDOE End of Semester Meeting

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

On Friday, May 16th faculty and staff gathered in Studio A from noon – 2:00pm for a meeting and lunch provided by Wimba. We talked about how the semester went with WebCT (Blackboard) Vista and Wimba Live Classroom. Kathy Fernandes, Academic Technologies Director, shared her vision about our need to upgrade to newer software, hardware, and origination rooms, as soon as we are able. Cris Guenter gave a synopsis of her pilot test this semester with Wimba’s Classroom 5 (new). We are moving to that over the summer. Here are some photos of our time together.
